Chapter

Twenty-Nine

Harley

Trust him.

“I know you don’t know me that well,” I say, muscles trembling as I stand poised above a pit of snakes with a long ass drop if I take one wrong step, “but that isn’t the easiest thing for me.”

“I do know you,” he says. “You’re my daughter, whether you ever acknowledge that or not. And the time I’ve spent with you has shown me your heart. You’re a survivor. Stronger than me and your mother combined. You do not cower, you do not yield. Now, do as I say and we can get out of here.”

I shudder against the faith in his words.

“I’ll buy you a giant profiterole,” he says.

“You’re bribing me with desserts?” A half sob, half laugh rips out of me. “Maybe you really are a dad.”

“I am a dad. Your dad.”

Okay. I can do this. I can let go of all my trust issues if it means I won’t die by snake. And I can’t let that rope break and leave him to the thousands of snakes below, either.

“Fine,” I say, my heart thundering in my ears. “Tell me what to do.”

“All right,” he says. “First thing is to step heel-to-toe thirty times.”

I do as he says, focusing on the solid feel of the thin plank beneath me. Counting in my head, I make it to twenty-seven, confidence chasing away the panic—

My toe slips and I have to wave my arms to right my balance.

“Twenty-eight steps,” he corrects himself. “Apologies.”

I snarl in his direction. “Apologies?”

“Well, I’m not exactly holding a measuring tape!” he says. “Now, I need you to sidestep to your left.”

“How far?”

“The length of your forearm.”

I feel the sturdiness of the wider plank I’d seen before. “There’s a wooden wall in front of me, right?” I ask, reaching my arms out before me.

“Yes,” he says. “About ten steps directly ahead of you. You’ll have to climb over that.”

“Great,” I grumble, then edge forward until my fingers hit the flat wall. I run my hands over it, trying to memorize the dips and grooves—

Rainier groans as the rope tears again. “Faster, Harley.”

I fling myself at the wall. Gripping anything I can hold on to, I manage to find places for the toes of my boots as I propel myself upward. I grin triumphantly when I reach the top, swinging a leg over the wide lip—

“Duck!” Rainier shouts.

I immediately flatten my stomach against the edge of the wood.

A whoosh of air blows over my back, and I clench my eyes shut against whatever is trying to hit me. “What is it?” I call back, clinging to the woodgrain like my life depends on it.

“Slide down! Now!”

I roll off the other side, hurtling down until my ass smacks against another plank. I hurry to my feet, pressing my back against the wood wall to balance myself.

“Good,” he says. “This is going to be the hard part.”

“Did the others seem easy?” I can almost feel him rolling his eyes, but I don’t really care right now. A cool breeze washes over my cheeks, almost like a fan is on the other side of the room.
